Austin Health, Kyneton District Health and Cobaw Community Health have launched a new Hepatitis C monthly Outreach Clinic in the Ambulatory Care Centre at Kyneton District Health.

Illustration of Healthy Human LiverHepatitis C is a blood-borne infection that damages the liver and causes liver cancer. Hepatitis C often doesn’t have any symptoms and many people with Hepatitis C don’t know they have it, so don’t receive any treatment.

Most Hepatitis C cases can now be cured with an 8 or 12 week course of tablets with very few side effects. Austin Health is leading the way in treating people in our community with Hepatitis C and has now cured over 1000 people since the new Hepatitis C medications became available.

Local residents currently travelling outside of the region to attend Austin Health’s Rapid Access to Hepatitis C Treatment Service will now be able to see a Gastroenterologist, Clinical Nurse Consultant and Clinical Pharmacist close to home. The clinic also offers access to FibroScan, a device that provides a quick and simple update on liver scarring.

Maree Cuddihy, CEO of Kyneton District Health, welcomed the news, stating the new clinic has boosted the community outreach services already available through the hospital.

“It’s fantastic for our local community that the Hepatitis C Outreach Clinic has come to Kyneton District Health. This new clinic allows patients to see their specialists locally, increasing access to treatment for those who need it,” Ms Cuddihy said.

Susan Campfield, Hepatitis C Clinic Nurse Consultant for Austin Health said:

“We’ve already established outreach clinics in West Heidelberg and Wallan and this new clinic in Kyneton will help us to further enable community-based treatment. Together with the existing services available at Austin Hospital, we are working towards the World Health Organisation target to eliminate Hepatitis C by 2030”.

The Hepatitis C Outreach Clinic is Medicare bulk-billed, meaning there is no cost to patients attending the clinic. Medication is dispensed via post by Austin Pharmacy at a cost of $6.50 per month for concession card holders and $39.50 per month for non-concession card holders.
